At a time when wide open spaces are increasingly hard to come by, we celebrate the vast, beautiful land surrounding Blanding, Utah known as the Colorado Plateau. If you love little towns, adventure, and secluded landscapes as much as we do, this is the place for you.
To-Do: State Route 95
One of the best traditions my family had growing up was road trips. In fact, my father loves long distance drives so much that he once bought a car in Canada and drove it all the way home. Did you know that some car rental agencies, when they need cars moved to different locations, will let clients rent them for rock bottom prices and drive them across the country? Something else my father has done.
As wonderful as it is to be able to hop on a plane and cross an ocean in less than a day, there are a lot of things you miss when you fly. Somewhere between El Paso, Texas and Tucson, Arizona there is a roadside attraction called, "THE THING." On our way to California, my dad kept us kids on tenterhooks with vague, cryptic references to what THE THING could be, warning us that it might be too scary for us. So of course we howled and begged to see it, and every so often we passed a billboard declaring that THE THING was drawing closer and closer, and we squealed and yanked at our seat belts and kicked our little legs in anticipation. When we arrived at the dusty, rundown, campy roadside museum and finally laid our eyes on THE THING, it didn't disappoint.
Just in case you ever decide to drive through that particular part of the U.S., I won't tell you what THE THING was. Just appreciate that such fond childhood memories would not have been possible if my parents had chosen to fly rather than drive.
So, if you want to get out into the great outdoors, but aren't too fond of the idea of hiking in the summer heat—how about a nice scenic drive? If you've been hankering for a couple hours' cruise or even a road trip, add Utah State Route 95 to your list. You can view the stunning red rock scenery this area is famous for from the comfort of your car, and there are plenty of places in Blanding and along the route to stop and explore.
